Digital Technologies
Information Technology has been with you from very long, You used to book your travel or movie tickets online, You also connected with your friends all over the world through Facebook/Gmail/Yahoo, You also used to browse Internet, download songs, watch videos on YouTube and much more. Now the question comes If you were doing all these things from very past than what have changed now? How the way by which you socialize or you travel or interact with this world has changed? The answer to these questions is, 'every thing around you is going digital.' But what does it mean that everything around you is getting digital.
Lets understand this with this short story
'Hary works as a freelancing consultant for which he frequently travels around, lets see his routine from the time he wakes up to the time when he sleeps.
He wakes up in morning by the morning alarm on his mobile phone, The alarm also triggers the geyser so that he gets hot water for bathing then he gets ready, book an uber to his office, have meeting with his clients on Skype, post that he orders his lunch through a food delivery service via his cell phone, In the meantime his father calls him to tell him about the broken pipe for which he books a plumber through an app on his mobile. His mother's birthday is coming next week so he orders a gift(A kindle on which she can read her favourite books), In the evening he makes a whats app video call to his father to enquire about the service offered by the plumber while traveling back home in an uber. On reaching home he watches his favourite movie on Netflix. Post movie his mobile reminds him of the upcoming meeting with a client for which he has to book tickets, He books it in no time through a ticketing app. After all the day of hard work lying on his couch hi dozes off, Alexa observes that and dims the light of the room, adjusted the ac temperature and he again wakes up next day by his alarm, Meanwhile the apple watch that he wears tracks his sleep and gives all the stats on his mobile.'
Al tough the examples used in this story are very basic and digital technologies means a lot more than this but still you can relate yourself to this story in some way or the other.
Before moving any further lets try to define Digital technology
Digital technology may refer to using new algorithms or applications to solve a problem even if computers were used to develop solutions in the past. It is an umbrella term for computer-based products and solutions.
Now after having a basic understanding of the term digital technology you will be willing to know that what all technologies come under its purview.
Technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cloud Computing, Edge Computing, BlockChain, IOT, Digital Marketing, Cyber Security, Mobile development, Robotic Process Automation , Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality are called as Digital technologies
A basic understanding of all these technologies will help us to know digital technologies in a better way.
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans. It is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. AI enabled machines can perform activities such as speech recognition, learning, planning, and problem solving. It enables the devices to perceive its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Machine learning — a core sub-field of AI — provides the ability for systems to cognitively learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed.
Data Science
Data Science is the field of study that combines domain expertise, programming skills, mathematics/statistics knowledge and Artificial Intelligence to extract meaningful insights from structures and unstructured data. Its practitioner apply machine learning algorithm on data to perform tasks that ordinarily require human intelligence. In turn, these systems generate insights which analysts and business users can translate into tangible business value.
BlockChain
In the simplest of terms, Blockchain is a time-stamped series of immutable record of data that is managed by cluster of computers not owned by any single entity. Each of these blocks of data (i.e. block) are secured and bound to each other using cryptographic principles (i.e. chain).
Whenever one party initiates a transaction by creating a block it first get verified with all the other computers present on the network and then get added to the chain, creating a unique record with unique history, Altering a single block means changing the entire chain of block which is not possible which makes this technology very robust.
You might have heard the use of blockchain in Bitcoins but that is just one application and it can be used in all business models in which a transaction is recorded. Eg - Ticket booking, Financial systems etc.
IOT
IOT is extending the power of Internet beyond computers to all other things like people, animal, mechanical and digital machines that are provided with a unique Identifier and that can gather information, send information or do both. IoT describes a world where just about anything can be connected and communicate in an intelligent fashion.
Examples of objects that can fall into the scope of Internet of Things include connected security systems, thermostats, cars, electronic appliances, lights in household and commercial environments, alarm clocks, speaker systems, vending machines and more.
Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is the use of the internet, mobile devices, social media, search engines, and other channels to reach consumers. Some marketing experts consider digital marketing to be an entirely new endeavor that requires a new way of approaching customers and new ways of understanding how customers behave compared to traditional marketing. Digital marketing targets a specific segment of the customer base and is interactive. Digital marketing is on the rise and includes search result ads, email ads and promoted tweets – anything that incorporates marketing with customer feedback or a two-way interaction between the company and customer. Website marketing, Pay-Per-Click Advertisement, Content marketing, Email Marketing, Social Media Marketing, Affiliate marketing are different types of digital Marketing.
Cyber Security
In today's world people relies more on technology as a result data is getting generated at huge rate. Today, businesses and governments store a great deal of that data on computers and transmit it across networks to other computers. Devices and their underlying systems have vulnerabilities that, when exploited, undermine the health and objectives of an organization. A data breach can have a range of devastating consequences for any business. It can make a dent on the company’s reputation through the loss of consumer and partner trust. The loss of critical data, such as source files or intellectual property, can cost a company its competitive advantage.
Cyber security or information technology security are the techniques of protecting computers, networks, programs and data from unauthorized access or attacks that are aimed for exploitation. It refers to the practice of ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and availability (ICA) of information.
Major areas covered in cyber security are:
- Application Security
- Information Security
- Disaster recovery
- Network Security
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. The hosted service here refers to data storage, servers, databases, networking and software. It gives you access to servers, storage, databases, and a broad set of application services over the Internet. A cloud services provider such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure etc owns and maintains the network-connected hardware required for these application services, while you provision and use what you need via a web application with pay-as-you-go pricing model. Cloud computing is a popular option for people and businesses for a number of reasons including cost savings, increased productivity, speed and efficiency, performance, and security.
Edge Computing
The increase of IoT devices at the edge of the network is producing a massive amount of data to be computed in the data centers, pushing network bandwidth requirements to the limit. Despite the improvements of network technology, data centers cannot guarantee acceptable transfer rates and response times, which could be a critical requirement for many applications. Edge computing is the practice of processing data near the edge of your network, where the data is being generated, instead of in a centralized data-processing warehouse. Here the data is processed by the device itself or by a local computer or server, rather than being transmitted to a data center.
Doing this computing closer to the edge of the network lets organizations analyze important data in near real-time – a need of organizations across many industries, including manufacturing, health care, telecommunications and finance. Edge computing deployments are ideal in a variety of circumstances. One is when IoT devices have poor connectivity and it’s not efficient for IoT devices to be constantly connected to a central cloud
Mobile Development
As mobile devices are becoming larger and larger parts of our lives Mobile Development has arguably become the future of development. It isn’t just about building phone apps, although that is certainly a larger part of it. It is doing any kind of development for any kind of mobile device be it be Mobile Device, Tablets, Smart watches and all kind of wearable
Robotic Process Automation
Robotic Process Automation is the technology that allows anyone today to configure computer software, or a “robot” to emulate and integrate the actions of a human interacting within digital systems to execute a business process. RPA bots can log into applications, enter data, calculate and complete tasks and then log out. They interpret, trigger responses and communicate with other systems in order to perform on a vast variety of repetitive tasks. Only substantially better: an RPA software robot never sleeps, makes zero mistakes and costs a lot less than an employee. Working as a virtual business assistant, bots complete tedious tasks, freeing up time for employees to concentrate on more engaging, revenue-generating tasks. Part of the beauty of robotic process automation technology is that it offers even non-technical employees the tools to configure their own software robots to solve automation challenges.
Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
- Virtual Reality is using computer technology to create a simulated, three-dimensional world that a user can manipulate and explore while feeling as if he is in that world. Apart from 3D image of the world, the ability to track a user's motions, particularly his head and eye movements, and correspondingly adjust the images on the user's display to reflect the change in perspective is also an essential element of Virtual Reality. If these two elements are present than the person becomes part of this virtual world and he feels like he is able to manipulate objects or perform a series of actions. VR can be applied to fields like Sports, Medicine, Entertainment, Arts, Architecture etc
- Augmented reality (AR) is a type of interactive, reality-based display environment that takes the capabilities of computer generated display, sound, text and effects to enhance the user's real-world experience. It combines real and computer-based scenes and images to deliver a unified but enhanced view of the world. It is the blend of interactive digital elements – like dazzling visual overlays, buzzy haptic feedback, or other sensory projections – into our real-world environments. Pokemon Go game and Snapchat app are very famous example of Augmented Reality
Today almost every industry in each and every field has either updated them are are planning to use at least one of these digital technologies and thus the requirement for these technologies are getting increased day by day thus Digital Technologies Zone is an endeavor by a Digital enthusiast to develop a platform where people can learn these technologies, discuss about them and evolve with this changing digital world.
